Andrew Danylchuk has been called "one of the most prominent advocates for fish and their habitats in recent years."

He says, "I am on a personal crusade to ensure that fish are around for future generations to enjoy, whether on the end of a fishing line, on a dinner plate, or simply to watch in wonder."

Danylchuk's current research focuses on evaluating the potential impacts of recreational angling on fish populations and working with stakeholder groups to develop best practices for catch-and-release.  

He has studied bonefish in The Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the South Pacific, Atlantic tarpon and permit in the Florida Keys, giant trevally in the Seychelles and Republic of Kiribati, golden dorado in South America, steelhead in British Columbia, bass and trout species in Ontario and Quebec, and striped bass and sea-run brook trout in New England.

The age of Fish Meat is here.  Our hunger for seafood grows and grows...but the seas are running out of fish.  More than half of the fish the world eats comes from fish farms.  But what exactly is farmed fish? Where does it come from, and how is it made?  Two friends, a fish scientist and engineer, take a sailing voyage through the cradle of western civilization to pull back the cover on modern fish farming. Ted, the engineer, is on a quest to spear a lionfish – the newest threat to coral reefs in the Western Atlantic.  Sarah, the journalist, doesn’t trust her grocery store and tries to catch lunch the old fashioned way.  Joe, the musician, wants to walk a watery mile in Hemingway’s shoes.  And Andy, the professor, just needs to take his mind off work. They all have a lot to learn.

The scenery sparkles, ranging from crystalline shallow flats spread out under an endless sky, to deep blue oceans and magical coral reefs. A soaring original score by Mark Peterson (Star Wars, The Gladiator, Chariots of Fire) helps bring this landscape to life. What We Fish For is like a Florida Keys vacation - full of strange and wonderful creatures above and below the water. It’s an experience to sit back and savor.

This newest film from the makers of "Fish Meat" and "Raising Shrimp" moves from a towering sportfisherman to fly fishing by paddleboard, from spearfishing the reef to a party boat full of enthusiastic first-timers.  An extended underwater sequence features a sailfish at the actual moment of capture.

What We Fish For

Removal of the Turner Dam on the Nissitissit River in Pepperell Massachusetts reconnected approximately 40 miles of upstream habitat to the Nashua River.

Restoring the Nissitisit River

DER, the City of Fall River, The Nature Conservancy, and other partners removed the Bleachery Dam  in Freetown in 2016. Removal of the dam reconnected seven miles of Rattlesnake Brook to the Taunton River and opened the brook to migration of trout.
