ABSTRACT:
This talk highlights a series of ongoing research activities within the UMass Transportation Center (UMTC) and the Arbella Insurance Human Performance Lab (HPL) that provide the essential link between transportation safety and operations. A primary focus of the talk is the human in loop nature of transportation systems, and how our understanding of human behavior directly impacts traffic safety (e.g., crashes), infrastructure design (e.g., complete streets) and traffic operations (e.g. left turns).

BIO:
Michael A. Knodler, Jr. Ph.D, is a professor in the Transportation Engineering Program of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. Additionally, he is Director of the UMass Transportation Center, which includes the Bay State Roads Program (Massachusetts LTAP), the University of Massachusetts Traffic Safety Research Program (UMassSAFE) and newly formed Aviation Center, and is an Associate Director of the Arbella Insurance Human Performance Laboratory (HPL), which includes four different driving simulators. His main areas of research and teaching are related to transportation safety, operations, design, and education.
