J.R. Gilhooly, Ph.D.

John R. Gilhooly, Ph.D., is Professor of Philosophy and Theology at Cedarville University, where he also serves as Director of the Honors Program. His work connects Christian theology with philosophy of religion, theological anthropology, metaphysics and the study of angels, demons and spiritual warfare.

Gilhooly is the author of 40 Questions About Angels, Demons, and Spiritual Warfare and The Devil’s Own Luck: Lucifer, Luck, and Moral Responsibility. He has also contributed to scholarly works on open-mindedness, the philosophy of religion, angelology, biblical interpretation, moral responsibility and theological responses to evil.

His published research includes work on angels in Scripture, the Septuagint, non-reductive dualism, the metaphysics of properties and the relationship between theology and philosophical questions about evil, freedom and responsibility. He has written for scholarly journals, edited volumes and Christian publications.

Gilhooly earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion and Historical Theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master of Theology from the University of Dallas and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from Texas A&M University.
