Election Night Disinformation Concerns

Mark Lukasiewicz, dean of The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, talked to Newsday about concerns of disinformation facing television and cable networks as they prepare for their Election Day coverage.



“Virtually all the mainstream media outlets, and the major networks for sure, have developed and resourced units that specialize in spotting” disinformation, he said. “They’re certainly applying the resources to combat that and to prevent their own channels from disseminating false information and I give them credit for that."


However, “the fact set for one group of people is completely different from the fact set of another group,” Dean Lukasiewicz explained, because of fast-growing social media platforms like TikTok — with 170 million users in the United States alone.


Dean Lukasiewicz also spoke to the Associated Press for the story, “By moving to podcasts, Harris and Trump are turning away from legacy media to spread their messages.”

Newsrooms’ Editing Decisions Under a Microscope

Mark Lukasiewicz, dean of The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, is featured in the Associated Press article, “In Trump-dominated media world, editing video takes on new significance — as BBC uproar shows.” The article is about high level resignations at the BBC, after filmmakers behind the documentary, Trump: A Second Chance, admitted they spliced together quotes from different sections of the speech Trump made before the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot to make it seem like he was directly urging violence. Dean Lukasiewicz noted that “every editing decision taken in a newsroom is now under a microscope and can be weaponized for political purposes.”

Nassau County GOP Victories Attributed to Unaffiliated Party Voters

Lawrence Levy, associate vice president and executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies, was interviewed by Newsday about GOP victories in Nassau County on Election Day. The reason for the wins was that more voters unaffiliated with a political party leaned Republican. “Whatever the Republicans were selling, the independent voters were buying,” said Levy. “Outside forces that really have nothing to do with the running of the county and who would be running it had a potentially strong impact on the outcome.”

Record Breaking Turnout for NYC Early Voting

Dr. Meena Bose appeared on WNYW-TV Fox 5 to discuss how the record-breaking turnout for early voting in New York City underscored public engagement in the mayoral race. “There is reporting that suggests total turnout on Election Day could approach 2 million. We haven’t seen numbers like that for a mayoral race in more than 30 years,” she said. Dr. Bose is a Hofstra University professor of political science, executive dean of the Public Policy and Public Service program, and director of the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency.
