Hofstra Law Professor James Sample discussed the quick pace of President Donald Trump’s executive order actions in the Newsday article “Legal observers say President Donald Trump’s quick pace could be an advantage.”



Democratic state attorneys general and legal advocacy groups have said more lawsuits are on the way as they push back against Trump’s directives. But unlike his first term when he was a Washington novice surrounded by a revolving door of competing advisers, this term he is surrounded by longtime loyalists, who have been publicly anticipating the legal battles to come.

“I think the strategy here is to flood the zone with orders and actions, knowing that it will be difficult, if not impossible, for opponents of his policies to stop them all,” said James Sample, a constitutional law professor at Hofstra Law School.

Possible Impact of Dismantling the DOE

Rebecca Natow, associate professor and director of the EdD in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies program and the MSEd in Higher Education Leadership & Policy Studies, was interviewed by Newsday for the article: “Trump wants to abolish the federal education department. What could it mean for Long Island schools?” The article explains the role of the Department of Education and what it would mean to local schools if it were dismantled. Dr. Natow said opposition to any action will likely argue that the president needs authority from Congress to eliminate the education department. “I expect we will see lawsuits. That’s going to be their argument, that it’s not the proper function of executive action,” she said.

Takeaways from Trump’s Inauguration and Executive Orders

Dr. Meena Bose was interviewed by NY 1 Spectrum News about President Trump’s first day in office and his inauguration. She was also interviewed by WFMD radio in Frederick, MD, about the president repealing restrictions placed on federal immigration officials under the Biden administration. Dr. Bose is a Hofstra University professor of political science, executive dean of the Public Policy and Public Service program, and director of the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency.

Work on Snow Squall VR Simulation Moves Forward

Last year, Dr. Jase Bernhardt, Hofstra associate professor of geology, environment, and sustainability, was awarded a $100,000 Road to Zero Community Traffic Safety Grant from the National Safety Council, to develop a VR simulation of driving in a snow squall. The project aims to share information about the onset of snow squalls, the importance of heeding emergency weather advisories, and how drivers should respond if they are on the road when a snow squall occurs. Dr. Bernhardt has partnered with meteorologists from the National Weather Service office in State College, PA, and was in Pennsylvania recently to participate in a press conference and conduct field research supporting his work. The press conference was promoted on PAcast – the official website of the Pennsylvania state government. Local news stations like NBC affiliate WJAC-TV; ABC affiliate WHTM-TV; WPMT-TV Fox43 News; and PennWatch covered the press conference.
