Accessibility

Last revised: June 1, 2025

Digital accessibility is an important part of ExpertFile’s design and development practices. We recognize the responsibility to ensure expert content is usable and accessible to all audiences, including people with disabilities who rely on assistive technologies.

ExpertFile is committed to conforming with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, an internationally recognized accessibility standard developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). WCAG 2.1 AA builds on WCAG 2.0 by introducing additional success criteria focused on mobile accessibility, low-vision users, and users with cognitive or motor impairments.

Platform Design & Content Delivery

ExpertFile content may be accessed in multiple ways:

  • On expertfile.com
  • On an organization’s website using ExpertFile Embeds (iframes)
  • Via ExpertFile’s API, where organizations fully control presentation and interaction

ExpertFile designs its platform to support accessibility across all delivery methods while enabling organizations to align expert content with their own accessibility standards and site-wide controls.

Accessibility Features & Conformance Support

Across ExpertFile-managed experiences (expertfile.com and standard embeds), the platform supports WCAG 2.1 AA requirements including:

Perceivable

  • Descriptive alternative text for images and media
  • Semantic HTML structure to support screen readers
  • Sufficient color contrast in default UI components
  • Support for text resizing and browser zoom without loss of functionality

Operable

  • Keyboard navigability for interactive elements
  • Logical and consistent navigation patterns
  • Descriptive titles for iframes and embedded content
  • Visible focus indicators for interactive controls

Understandable

  • Consistent labeling and navigation
  • Predictable interface behavior
  • Clear hierarchy and readable content structure

Robust

  • Compatibility with modern assistive technologies
  • Screen reader support for ExpertFile search and profile views
  • Standards-based markup to support current and future user agents

Embeds (iFrames)

ExpertFile embeds are implemented using accessible iframe techniques, including:

  • Descriptive title attributes on all iframes
  • Keyboard and screen reader compatibility
  • Logical focus order within embedded content

This allows expert search results and full expert profiles to be consumed reliably by assistive technologies while embedded within an organization’s site.

API-Based Implementations

For organizations requiring full design and interaction control, ExpertFile’s API enables expert content to be rendered directly within an organization’s existing website framework.

In API implementations:

  • ExpertFile provides structured, accessible data
  • Organizations control templates, components, and UI behavior
  • Accessibility compliance aligns with the organization’s existing WCAG 2.1 AA implementation

This approach ensures expert content inherits the same accessibility patterns, tools, and testing processes already in place across the organization’s digital ecosystem.

Assistive Technology Compatibility

ExpertFile supports use with common assistive technologies, including:

  • Screen readers such as VoiceOver (macOS) and Windows Narrator
  • Browser-based zoom and text resizing tools
  • Keyboard-only navigation

Users are encouraged to use the accessibility features built into their operating systems and browsers for the best experience.

Screen Magnification & Browser Zoom

Modern browsers allow users to resize text and page elements using standard keyboard controls:

  • Windows: Ctrl + + (zoom in) / Ctrl + – (zoom out)
  • macOS: Cmd + + (zoom in) / Cmd + – (zoom out)

ExpertFile layouts are designed to support resizing without loss of content or functionality.

Input & Pointer Customization

Users may customize mouse, pointer, and input settings at the operating system level to improve visibility and control. These settings work alongside ExpertFile’s interface and embedded content.

Ongoing Commitment

Accessibility is an ongoing effort. ExpertFile continually evaluates its platform against evolving accessibility standards and best practices, including updates to WCAG guidance and assistive technology support.
