Pope Leo XIV Paid Public Homage to St. Augustine in Algeria, but Has Invoked His Teachings Since Election, Says Augustine Scholar Paul Camacho

During his historic trip to Africa in April 2026, Pope Leo XIV toured the archaeological ruins of Annaba, Algeria, capping what he referred to as a “special” journey to the country. Annaba, where the ancient city of Hippo Regius once stood, is not far from where St. Augustine—patron of the Augustinian order to which the Pope belongs—was ordained, made bishop and crafted his most influential theological works. Walking in his footsteps, Pope Leo—who referred to himself as a “Son of Augustine” upon his election to the papacy—toured the ruins with other members of the Order and his traveling party. It was a personal and symbolic moment, but for those paying close attention to his early pontificate, it represented only the most recent of many tributes he has paid to Augustine and his teachings. “In reading through Pope Leo’s addresses and his homilies, his messages and his video recordings, there is barely one that goes by without him referencing Augustine in some way,” said Paul A. Camacho, PhD, associate director of The Augustinian Institute at Villanova University, and scholar of Augustine’s teachings. When the Pontiff accepted the St. Augustine Medal from the Augustinian Province of St. Thomas of Villanova in August 2025, he made it clear why. “As Augustinians, we strive every day to live up to the spiritual example of our spiritual father, St. Augustine,” he said to the Province. “To be recognized as an Augustinian, it’s an honor held dearly. So much of who I am, I owe to the spirit and teachings of St. Augustine and I am grateful to all of you for all the many ways your lives exhibit a deep commitment to the values of Veritas, Unitas and Caritas.” Veritas Examples abound related to all three values and how Pope Leo has invoked Augustine in speaking about them. Dr. Camacho cites a handful he found particularly noteworthy. For example, Veritas first appeared in an especially prominent way during an early address for the June Solemnity of the Holy Trinity and Jubilee of Sport. Then, Pope Leo said, “This combination of Trinity and Sport is somewhat unusual, yet the juxtaposition is not inappropriate. Every good worthwhile human activity is in some way a reflection of God’s infinite beauty, and sport is certainly one of these.” “For St. Augustine, the Trinity and wisdom are intimately connected,” Dr. Camacho said, also mentioning that Augustine authored an entire book on the subject titled “On the Trinity.” “Divine wisdom is revealed in the Most Holy Trinity and wisdom always leads us to Veritas—the truth," he said. “What Pope Leo goes on to do is say that the life of God, the Trinity, is a life of play…It’s a dance, and dance is a sport, and our own way of participating in that kind of activity is a participation in life of God.” When Pope Leo later spoke to the International Foundation of Catholic Universities—an occasion for which the motto was “Choreographers of Knowledge”—he referenced that dance again. “Pope Leo invites us to think of our relationship to Veritas not as something to master,” Dr. Camacho said. “But rather as a light that draws us out of ourselves towards it, in a dance of relationship with it and one another.” Unitas During a September Mass for the General Chapter of the Order of St. Augustine, Pope Leo prayed that those in attendance be given “the gift to listen, the gift to be humble and the gift to promote unity within the Augustinian Order, and throughout the Order, throughout the Church and the world.” Earlier in the summer, he touched on unity during the Jubilee of Families, Children, Grandparents and the Elderly, commenting on the Gospel of John, in which “Christ prays that we may all be one.” “This being one is the greatest good we can desire, for this universal union brings about among his creatures the eternal communion of love that is God himself: the Father who gives life, the Son who received it and the Spirit who shares it… the Lord does not want us in this unity to be a nameless and faceless crowd,” Pope Leo said. “What Pope Leo expresses here is that unity is not conformity, but rather community—the kind of community in which each one of us becomes more of who it is that we are the more we love and work for what is good in common,” explained Dr. Camacho. “This is a deeply Augustinian insight.” In one general audience with members of various religious groups, Pope Leo relayed “Unity has always been a constant concern of mine, as witnessed by the motto I chose for my episcopal ministry.” He was referencing, Dr. Camacho says, the Latin phrase In illo uno unum, displayed on his coat of arms. “That phrase—‘in the one [Christ] we are one’—comes from St. Augustine’s commentary on the Psalms. Pope Leo comes back again to this idea that when we love and follow the truth that is Christ, we simultaneously become more uniquely individual, and our unity becomes genuine community, and not mass conformity.” Caritas In his Opening Homily for the Beginning of the Pontificate, Pope Leo followed his salutations with these words: “I greet you all with a heart full of gratitude at the beginning of the ministry that has been entrusted to me. St. Augustine wrote: ‘Lord, you have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” According to Dr. Camacho, Augustine taught that the solution to the restless heart is Caritas, or rightly ordered love that finds its rest in God. Augustine’s thinking about love is developed in a social dimension when he distinguishes between two different kinds of political communities, which he calls the “Earthly City” (in which pride and self-love dominate), and the “City of God” (in which love of God and neighbor form the community). Augustine’s enduring and influential work “De Civitas Dei,” or “City of God,” articulates this distinction between false and true loves. At the 16th Annual Meeting of the International Catholic Legislators Network, Pope Leo suggested that we look to Augustine, citing his own witness of social upheavals in his time, and that we consider Augustine’s reminder that we must attend to these “two orientations of the human heart.” “Ordo amoris—order of love,” explained Dr. Camacho. “This is Augustine’s notion that following Christ is not a matter of private devotion, but rather demands a dilation of our hearts: our loves must move out to embrace the poor, the marginalized, the downtrodden, the forgotten. In Catholic Social Thought, this is the principle of solidarity: while the things that we love begin with what is most intimate to us, we are called to expand our love outward. One of the things Pope Leo is trying to say is that Augustine’s thought remains a living inspiration for how we might organize our societies.” Speaking to the International Interparliamentary Union in late June, Pope Leo intimated that St. Augustine speaks of “your responsibility to promote and protect, independent of any special interest, the good of the community, the common good, particularly by defending the vulnerable and the marginalized.” “Augustine’s idea was that what makes a community is what its members love in common,” Dr. Camacho said. “In other words, Caritas—love—is fundamental to how we think about how we relate to one another. Not just on a one-to-one, personal level or in terms of a private relationship to my own good, but rather how we relate to our communities, and what we build together for the common good.” “Bringing Augustine Back to the World” One of the great gifts of the Augustinian Order, says Dr. Camacho, is that “because of its charism of community, it draws individuals to become religious from all walks of life, and not just those who have extensively read or studied the work of Augustine.” It is especially noteworthy, he says, just how entrenched Pope Leo’s words and actions are in his long-time study of Augustine. “It is quite clear that Pope Leo loves Augustine, not just as an exemplar, as a patron saint of the Order, or as a doctor of the Church—though he is all of these. Leo loves Augustine as a companion: a man whose life reminds us that discipleship is about fidelity and not about perfection; a thinker who is rich in philosophical and theological insight; and a priest and bishop who cared deeply for his community. “In his pontificate, it is already clear that Pope Leo, this great “Son of Augustine,” is bringing Augustine back to the Church and to the world as a vital source of wisdom and inspiration.”

First Dual-City Olympics to Showcase Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo With Ceremonies and Themes Celebrating Their History, Growth and Cultural Importance

Long proclaimed Italy’s “moral capital,” Milan is renowned worldwide for its significant contributions to fashion, design and the arts. Soon, another point of pride will be added to the city’s storied history, when the regional hub—and partnering town Cortina d’Ampezzo—plays host to the 2026 Winter Olympics in February. Luca Cottini, PhD, is a professor of Italian Studies and an expert on the evolution of Italian culture, particularly through the 19th and 20th centuries. Recently, he shared some thoughts concerning Milan and Cortina’s successful joint bid for the Olympics, the themes and iconography expected to define this year’s opening ceremony and the symbolic significance of Italy’s selection as a host nation. Question: What was the role of past major events in Milan and Cortina—like the 2015 World’s Fair and the 1956 Winter Olympics—in helping to elevate their appeal for these games? Luca Cottini: I’ll start by saying that although people notice world’s fairs less than the Olympics, they are more impactful to a city and country because they generate more revenue, business, political relationships and positive reputation. They are events in which all the world comes together and each country exposes its excellence, while the host nation brings a visibility that it would not carry otherwise. In 2015, Milan hosted the world’s fair, which generated a completely new fairgrounds area and a visibility of politics, industry, technology and modernity in a way that brings the city to a global stage. I would say that is when the ascent of Milan really started, especially as a desirable destination. With Cortina, after the 2015 World’s Fair—and especially after the COVID-19 pandemic—the Dolomites became really a popular region for travelers to visit. Cortina is also symbolic to Olympic history, because it's the site of the first Olympics that took place in Italy, in 1956 during the reconstruction era. That was the Dolce Vita period, in the middle of the 1950s economic boom, and those games were followed by Rome’s Summer Olympics in 1960. They both represented a way in which Italy, coming out of the war destroyed, was reaffirming its rebirth. Over the years, fewer cities have wanted to host the Olympics because they tend to carry a lot of economic burden, financial debt and little return on investment. In this sense, Milan and Cortina, helped by increased popularity after the world’s fair, sold themselves as a sustainable Olympics. Ninety percent of the buildings were refurbished from older buildings, and they will serve purposes after the Olympics. It’s difficult to tell whether it’s economically sound or not, but it is a way to promote two cities that are in big moments of growth. Q: These Olympic Games will be celebrating Milan’s contributions to fashion. What is the city’s significance to the fashion world? LC: Milan is certainly the capital of fashion in Italy, and is one of the capitals of fashion in the world, along with Paris, New York and London. The fashion heritage that the city carries now in iconic brands like Armani, Versace, Moschino and Dolce & Gabbana is the outcome of a process that took shape in the late 1970s. Until then, fashion in Italy was mainly related to Rome, through cinema, and Florence, as that city represented a new Renaissance in the postwar years. But in the 1970s, much of this fashion world moved from those cities to Milan, because there was a conglomeration of labor, skills, capital and creativity that generated a complex productive and cultural system, or the so-called “Sistema Moda.” This is a particular approach to the industry in Italy that coordinates management and creativity around the figures of a big creative director and a big manager who work together in creating not just nice styles, but also sustainable outlets and markets in and outside Italy. In turn, with its reputation, Milan gives the Olympics that seal of grandeur and coolness. The connection with fashion and promotion of uniqueness is part of the national rhetoric that surrounds what we call “Made in Italy,” this idea of luxury, styling, beauty, order and measure that is endowed in the Italian DNA. Q: Andrea Bocelli—who also appeared in Torino’s 2006 closing ceremony—is supposed to sing once again in this year’s opening ceremony. Aside from his popularity, what is the symbolic significance of his selection as a performer? LC: Bocelli is an interesting case. He is a prototypical Italian success story, which is born in the peninsula but is then ratified outside of Italy. As Bocelli became a global sensation in the U.S., he then came back to his roots in Italy, where his voice has become a symbol of national unity, as epitomized in his solo concerto of Milan, during the pandemic, when he sang in front of the empty Piazza del Duomo, facing the city’s cathedral. In his Catholic faith and secular operatic repertoire, he symbolizes Italian culture as a similar piazza or open space where different voices can converge in a temperate balance. When you put together Bocelli, Mariah Carey and whoever else will be part of the ceremony, that same Italian identity will give rise to a new synthesis, as the encounter of tradition and novelty, grounded-ness and openness. Q: The Olympic flames are supposed to be lit in two cauldrons—one in Milan and one in Cortina—each with a design inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. What was da Vinci’s importance to Milan, specifically? LC: Da Vinci is part of the fabric of Milan. He spent 20 years in the city, painting “The Last Supper” and working at Castello Sforzesco, as well as many other places. His footprint is all over Milan, in its design, walls, canal system and more. He is an archetype of the Italian mind in as much as it represents the combination of engineering and beauty. The word Ingenium in Latin, meaning “genius,” overflows in English into the word “engineering” and also “ingenuity,” which reflects the creative mind. Da Vinci represents the synthesis of Italian Ingenium as a combination of aesthetics and problem solving, which you still see in the city today.

Aston University researcher investigates safety risks of secondhand cosmetics sold online

As second-hand beauty products grow in popularity, so do questions about their safety. At Aston University, Dr Amreen Bashir, senior lecturer in biomedical science, is leading an academic investigation into the microbiological risks associated with pre-owned cosmetics being sold through online platforms like Vinted and Facebook Marketplace. The project, which has received ethical approval from the University’s Health and Life Sciences Ethics Committee, will assess the types of bacteria and potential contaminants found in used cosmetics – such as makeup and skincare – when they are resold and reused by new owners.  “Second-hand beauty is trending for sustainability and affordability,” said Dr Bashir. “But very little research has explored what’s actually living in those products — and what kind of risk that might pose to everyday users.” Why this matters Pre-owned beauty items are often marketed as sustainable and cost-effective, but without careful handling they can harbour microorganisms – from bacteria to mould – that may cause infections, allergic reactions, or worse. Without knowing when a product was first opened or its expiry date, buyers could be unknowingly using unsafe cosmetics. Dr Bashir’s study will be among the first in the UK to analyse not just contamination, but also expiry timelines, and how low consumer awareness of these dates adds to the risk. The study will explore: • Types of microbiological contamination found in used products • Risks posed by product type (e.g., mascaras vs. powders) • Storage conditions and packaging integrity • Expiry dates and consumer awareness, for example: - Cosmetics have expiry timelines printed as either a date or a small jar symbol with a number (e.g., 6M, 12M, 24M, 36M), indicating months after opening. - Products can be contaminated long before the expiry date if not stored properly. - Dr Bashir’s previous research found that many makeup users didn’t know where to find the expiry date on the packaging and often kept products for years past their safe-use period. Potential to shape consumer safety and regulation With second-hand beauty sales on the rise, the findings could help shape public health messaging, consumer awareness campaigns, and online marketplace guidelines. Results could also support industry discussions on product labelling, returns, and hygiene standards. School will soon be out for the summer, and many young families are opting to explore the beauty of their own country, travelling to top destinations like Toronto, Vancouver, and Halifax rather than heading south. While many travellers prioritize insurance for international trips, a recent CAA survey found that many people overlook the necessity of travel insurance for domestic travel, often assuming provincial healthcare will have them covered. "Exploring Canada’s breathtaking landscapes is an adventure worth taking, but unexpected travel hiccups don’t stop at the border,” says Susan Postma, regional manager, CAA Manitoba. “Whether it’s a sudden medical emergency or trip disruptions, having the right travel insurance ensures you can focus on making memories." A new national travel survey conducted for CAA reveals that nearly four in ten Canadians (39 per cent) travelled outside their home province without any form of travel insurance during their last trip. Some believed it was unnecessary (45 per cent), others worried about the cost (22 per cent), and 19 per cent took their chances, hoping nothing would go wrong. The reality? Provincial health insurance programs typically cover only basic emergency medical services when travelling in another province. “Many Canadians assume they’re fully protected when travelling within the country, but that’s simply not the case,” says Postma “A minor mishap can become a major expense, whether a broken ankle on a hike or a last-minute interruption.” Here are two unexpected ways travel insurance can help: You break your ankle while hiking on one of Canada’s beautiful nature trails and now need an ambulance or an airlift, crutches, and medication. You’re on vacation but must return unexpectedly because someone at home gets seriously ill. In stressful situations, like when a family member falls ill, it helps to have support when you need it. Trip Cancellation Insurance would cover the flight change fee and help get you back home. According to Orion Travel Insurance, part of the CAA family, the average medical claim cost has risen by 15 per cent annually since 2019, with everything from ear infections to air ambulance services becoming significantly more expensive. Here are ten additional tips to help your trip go smoothly, no matter where you travel. Know the cancellation policies and check limits or restrictions for everything you booked. Make sure you understand any key dates related to cancellations or changes. This includes accommodation, flights, car rentals, tours, and cruises. It is recommended that passport renewals be completed six months before your planned trip.
