Laura Velez-Garcia joined the social work adjunct faculty in 2012 as an external field instructor.

Biography

LAURA VELEZ-GARCIA joined the social work adjunct faculty in 2012 as an external field instructor.

A licensed clinical social worker, Velez-Garcia has served as a psychiatric social worker with the Los Angeles Unified School District since 1997. She is currently assigned to the Educationally Related Intensive Counseling Services unit in the district’s Division of Special Education. Earlier, she was a mental health consultant with its Early Childhood Education branch and has extensive experience working with preschool, elementary, middle and high school student populations in several southeast communities served by the district. She also was a member of Los Angeles Unified’s crisis response team.

Previously, Velez-Garcia was an in-home outreach counselor with the Human Services Association’s family preservation program. She also served in the adoptions, emergency response, and family maintenance and reunification units at the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.
